Update

It strikes me as I was cleaning up this post that I should point out something very important.  Something I completely neglected in the video. It’s something that I’ve never seen anyone else write about New Media Expo, BlogWorld or any other conference.
Everything in the video, everything below, everything in the articles about the show and things you’ll read on twitter, facebook, google plus, etc.  They are all tips for an ideal situation.  It’s more of a guideline, a goal, not a rule.
If you can’t cover all these bases.  Don’t sweat it.

  • The best thing you can do is make it to the show and be there.
  • The next best thing you can do is be engaged while you are there.  Talk to people, do things.
  • The next best thing after that if you can’t be there, is to get the digital ticket and engage people online through social media.
  • But do something.  Don’t give up before you ever get started.

I’ve been to this show every single time it’s happened since it started in 2007 and all but the first of the Podcast Expos too.  Sometimes I am super prepared and totally on top of my game and sometimes, I’m not.  In 2010, everything went like clockwork.  In 2008, I booked my flight the night before, bought the ticket a week before, flew in and flew out the same night!
This year, I’m more prepared than most years, but still its not a perfect plan for me either.  I’m rocking 3 year old business cards!

I hate making business cards and always put it off and off and off.

Is a three year old business card going to slow me down?  Hell no!  I’m more than just my business card and so are you.  Go to the show. No business card, no worries.  People can get to know you, connect with you, teach you something, learn something from you, and you can walk away from it enriched, empowered, and maybe even with some new business or business tools.  The three biggest business deals I ever accomplished all happened without any business cards being swapped.

Contract were swapped but no business cards!

So get to the show, meet someone, learn something, share something.  Don’t sweat the small stuff.  If you can cover your bases with one or two things below great.  If you can up your game a couple levels with the tips below, even better.  But it’s YOU!  YOU are the important ingredient, the essential component to make the show work, not the i’s that you dot, nor the t’s that you cross, nor the paper that you shuffle nor the dog and pony show you see or create.  Do something useful with yourself and everything else will work itself out!
