MindManager Powered by Your Voice is Here!

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

For a couple years now, I have been looking forward to the day when I could power MindManager with my voice.  I could think it, speak it, and it would be mapped!

A couple years back, I picked up on Dragon Naturally Speaking 9, then upgraded to version 10.  Neither version plays nice with MindManager 5, 6, 7, or 8!

Fortunately, a great little company has come up with a cheap solution to bridge that gap and the software is called VoxEnable.

Now, I sat down a week ago and created a series of videos showing how VoxEnable made it possible to use Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 with MindManager 8.  It worked beautifully.

Unfortunately, I had my video/audio recording settings cross wired, and the audio of my voice didn’t make it into the video.  Today, I finally got around to making those videos.  They are a little low tech as I created them on the airplane coming out here.  :)

That itself was a fun little experiment.  I wanted to see how the airplane sound quality might impact Dragon Naturally Speaking.  (End result, no impact at all, it worked great).

The first video is above, and I will have some more videos to follow this as I get a chance to publish them this week, so don’t forget to subscribe to our site if you haven’t already!

How to Increase Dragon’s Vocabulary with Documents and Text on Your Computer

Monday, January 5th, 2009

If you have a lot of documents already written on your hard drive, or if you copy some in later (maybe from a work computer or a shared server or downloading a blog or something) and you want Dragon to be ready to recognize the words in those documents when you speak them you can do this through the Accuracy Center.

Go to Tools>accuracy center and look in the right column for Add words from your documents to the vocabulary.  (also notice the increase accuracy from email option below that!)
moz-screenshot-2

Now, this will help Dragon ‘contextually’ understand how to put words together, even words that it currently doesn’t know how to write, but some of those individual words will still need to be matched up to your voice.  Regardless, this will definitely help and will speed up the amount of time you would need to train Dragon Naturally Speaking otherwise

Auto Save of Draft Documents in Dragon Pad Requested for Dragon Naturally Speaking 10

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Many times when I use Dragon Naturally Speaking, I write in Dragon Pad.  I don’t write in it because it is better than Word, but instead because it does not include all the corrupt formatting code that Word includes.  This enables me to copy/past the text from Dragon Pad safely into an html editor (for copy) or into WindowsLiveWriter (for blog articles).

image

Well, there is a big fat problem with Dragon Pad.  :)

It does not have an auto-save function anywhere that I can find.  If your computer crashes (as mine just did, thanks Microsoft Vista), if your Dragon Pad document is not saved, then you are out of luck.

The program just needs a simple auto-save or auto-recovery capability.  That can’t be too hard can it?

When Dragon Naturally Speaking and MindManager 8 Collide You Get VoxEnable

Monday, December 15th, 2008

image

Great News!  Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 and MindManager 8 might soon work well together.

I have reviewed in the past the limitations of using Dragon Naturally Speaking with MindManager.  It works, a bit but it doesn’t work nearly as well as either program work alone.  Recognizing this problem a solution has been developed in the form of software that is supposed to bridge the gap and make it possible to run MindManager 8 using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.

The company, Citnexus, that has created this solution, calls the software VoxEnable.

I’ve just heard about this and written to the company to get more information.  In reviewing the shopping cart, it is less than clear how this software sells or ads on to existing configurations.

I for example own both Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 and MindManger 8.

VoxEnable seems to come bundled with upgrades for both Dragon and MindManager and it comes stand alone.

I could be wrong (as I’ll admit I’m confused by the pricing and product descriptions) but I think if you already have both Dragon and MindManager that the software only costs £29.95.

In the meantime, you can play with Dragon and MindManager 8 together without VoxEnable, but you will not get anything productive done.  Without a boost, the two just are not good enough alone.  I’m hoping that VoxEnable puts them both over the top, but I’ll let you know. . . .  :)

The Words Improve Even After You Say them in Dragon

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

image I came across a tip in Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 tonight.  It’s actually something that I had witnessed before, but was not 100% certain that it was intentional.

Basically when you say something in dragon, you will see a small yellow text box with the words you just said, appear on your screen before.  Then your words will show up in the actual program you are writing in.

The words in the yellow text box are there so that you can see visually that Dragon IS listening to you and doing something.  Just like a person that listens to you, it sometimes takes a few seconds for the words to sink in and really take their meaning

So Dragon listens to you and the comprehension takes place a bit behind the scenes after you have spoken the rest of your words.  If you say a sentence with 15 words in it, the word that Dragon thinks it hears at word 4 may be different in context after its heard the 13th worth.  So Dragon displays in yellow what it initially thinks you said, then later it modifies its own comprehension and writes the most likely word after it has picked up the full context of your words later.

Dragon Naturally Speaking Makes NaNoWriMo Easier as long as you have Ideas!

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

This month is drawing to a close and I have been writing a novel using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 and my pocket Sony MP3 Recorder.  This setup has worked fantastically for me.  Its about 26 hours until the deadline for NaNoWriMo expires (and I’m writing another blog article instead of finishing the contest).

image

To date I have written 45,022 words. It takes 50,000 words to finish the contest.  I’m almost done, and only need 5,000 words to finish.  I write that much today in three sessions (10 minutes, 10 minutes and 23 minutes).

I will probably finish tonight before I go to bed. Tomorrow, we are hitting the road for a Thanksgiving drive back from Illinois to North Carolina.  I could write quite a bit during that drive, but I’m not sure if I can concentrate with Scooby Doo playing on the kids DVD player in my ear.

Plus, I need to insure that I get the book loaded up into the system and confirmed before the midnight deadline tomorrow night.

Anyway, if you look at my chart above, you will see the ‘lurches’ in my writing activity.  That is not because I worked diligently everyday, completing 1700 words per day.  No, with Dragon and my poor habits and lack of planning and good distractions from the family, tend to miss a few days and then write several thousand words.

I often feel like I actually start writing after I’ve thought about a chapter or scene or two for a couple of days and then the idea just spills out of me as I write it up in a burst of 2-5 thousand words.  :)

I suspect that the book I’m writing will actually end up being about 250,000 words, so its going to be a long fun winter.  If I keep eating as much as I did this Thanksgiving, then I’m going to have to take the summer off to get into shape, or go get lyposuction or a Apidexin prescription or just shoot to become the worlds fattest man.

Below we offer a quick glimpse into the overall benefit that a writer/blogger could enjoy under the different platforms.

clip_image002

Each of these platforms utilizes a very different business model which can benefit bloggers that generate both quality work or large quantities of work. Google’s Adsense program while paying the least for lower quality also offers an almost unlimited amount of potential for bloggers that want to write to the maximum.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Blogger Break Even Analysis with Heavy Adsense Earnings

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

In previous examples(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6), I walked you through the logic that shows that you can pay for Dragon NaturallySpeaking in just over a half a day, with the extra earnings that you would receive if you write for textbroker.com. Dragon NaturallySpeaking can help you type so much faster, that you can earn a lot more money per hour.

Dragon Naturally Speaking Cost Benefit Analysis Across 4 Different Blog & Writing Monetization Platforms White Paper (871.4 KiB, 333 hits)

In this final article I’m going to walk you through a new scenario, focusing on how much more money you could earn if your blog earns money (‘good money!’) from Google’s Adsense program. Now with Adsense, the amount of money that you earn for your writing is not paid on a per word basis. It’s paid either based on the number of visitors that view your articles (CPM) or based on the people that click on ads on the same page where your article is published (PPC).

clip_image002

Regardless, the more people and traffic you have, the better your chances for more conversions and earnings with Adsense.

Bad Fishing Analogy – More articles, basically equates to more hooks in the lake to catch earnings.

So what can mad typing speed skills do to help you earn more money from Adsense?

First, here’s a list of some assumptions for this scenario. We will assume that an Average Traffic Blog has the following characteristics:

· CPC earnings of $0.31 per click (this can depend on site topic)

· Each article written generates 20,000 page views during the first 60 days after publication of an article

· Articles are on average 200 words long (long enough to be unique and be recognized by Google Search as unique)

· Articles will see a click through rate of .0041 or 0.41%

So if a person writes 5 articles totaling 1,000 words in length, those 5 articles should generate 100,000 page views x a click through rate of .0041 = 410 clicks x $0.31 = $127.10 of earnings!

You are doing great, how about learning how to do this faster and easier!

If you write more articles, your site in general will bring in more total page views and some of that traffic will even look around your site, read more, and maybe subscribe. Your page views will grow and your Adsense earnings will grow as well. Not to mention your earnings from other forms of advertising will go up also!

To make a good business decision, you have to determine how to get there from here.

So if you find a way to generate more articles -> more page views –> more earnings, well then you have done something right.

One component of the cost of those articles is the time you spend writing them. If you type at 35 words per minute for 50 minutes at a stretch taking a 10 minute break and then repeating that process for 4 hours, You will have written 35 articles of 200 words at the end of 4 hours.

Publishing those articles based on our assumptions will generate 700,000 page views. Those Page views will generate 2,870 clicks, and that will earn you $895.60 per day (for 4 hours of work).

That’s a little almost than $225 per hour. You might be internet famous, but who cares, you are earning good money!

clip_image004

The key is that it took you 4 hours to write 35 articles at 35 words per minute.

If you use Dragon Naturally Speaking you could write 150 articles in 4 hours with 10 minute breaks.

That would generate 3,000,000 page views translating into 12,300 clicks and earnings of $3,838 or about $960 per hour, if you weren’t before you will be internet famous now!

It also happens to be about 4 times more than you would earn if you only type 35 words per minute.

Now Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 costs between $99 and $199. (discount and promo accounts can save you $25 and $50 respectively if you buy before December 31)

At this point I’m not even going to go any further with this cost analysis. You can pay for Dragon Naturally Speaking in the amount of time it takes one of your readers to read your article!

It’s definitely a no brainer.

Now, for a reality check. Odds are you may not be able to sit down and write article after article for more than an hour at 150 words per minute, your brain will run out of material!

But the articles that you can write can be written much faster than you could before, and you CAN use that time to do many other things to grow your site and your earnings Go out and have some fun.

clip_image006

So to put this in better perspective, if you wrote 9 articles, and those articles were each 200 words long, then you would have written a total of 1800 words.

  • 1800 words can be typed in 50 minutes at 35 words per minute
  • 1800 words can be typed in 12 minutes at 150 words per minute

Dragon NaturallySpeaking can essentially cut your work load down by 1/5th!

Now with those additional thirty-eight minutes, you can spend more time:

  • promoting your blog,
  • networking with people,
  • researching other projects,
  • taking on other work from
    other networks
  • Sell advertising additional advertising on your site. At 3 million page views per day, you can probably charge $10 – $80k just for a banner ad!
  • The only reason why you are even fooling with Adsense at all is so that you can keep your operation lean and mean and avoid hiring an ad sales team.

You’re Done, Success Achieved. J

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Blogger Break Even Analysis with Medium Adsense Earnings

So if a person writes 5 articles totaling 1,000 words in length, those 5 articles should generate 5000 page views x a click through rate of .0041 = 20.5 clicks x $0.31 = $6.36 of earnings!

Wow! Stop the presses you are earning big bucks now. J Just kidding, that’s actually the wrong attitude. Google pays you to advertise on your site and pays you when your advertising is effective. If you are generating 1,000 page views per article, that is not bad but not super effective and so you can’t expect much for compensation. At these levels, you can probably expect to improve, because you certainly are not failing. J

However, if you write more articles, your site in general will bring in more total page views and some of that traffic will even look around your site, read more, and maybe subscribe. Your page views will grow and your Adsense earnings will grow as well. Not to mention your earnings from other forms of advertising will go up also!

Publishing those articles based on our assumptions will generate 35,000 page views. Those Page views will generate 144 clicks, and that will earn you $44.78.

That’s a little better than $11.20 per hour. Not internet famous or rich, but you can add that to your sites other earnings from companies like PayPerPost or PayU2Blog.

The key is that it took you 4 hours to write 35 articles at 35 words per minute.

If you use Dragon Naturally Speaking you could write 150 articles in 4 hours with 10 minute breaks.

That would generate 150,000 page views translating into 615 clicks and earnings of $191.91 or about $47.98 per hour, which again can be in addition to your other earnings from the same site off the same articles!

It also happens to be about 5 times more than you would earn if you only type 35 words per minute.

Now Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 costs between $99 and $199. (discount and promo accounts can save you $25 and $50 respectively if you buy before December 31)

So if you can earn an extra $36.78 per hour with Dragon through Adsense, Dragon will pay for itself after 2-3 hours if you buy the basic version without the discount code and 5-6 hours if you buy Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred without the discount code.

That’s pretty much a no brainer!

Consider also that during those 5-6 hours you spend writing to pay for Dragon Naturally Speaking, you will have brought in over 200,000 page views to your site, and many of those articles can earn a great deal from additional blog advertising and monetization options!

Now, for a reality check. Odds are you may not be able to sit down and write article after article for more than an hour at 150 words per minute. But the articles that you can write can be written much faster than you could before, and you CAN use that time to do many other things to grow your site and your earnings.

clip_image006[1]

Well if you could type at 150 words per minute with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and you currently type at 35 words per minute, then you could earn about $36.78 per hour more!

<
p>Reminder – This would assume that you could type articles nonstop at a hundred and fifty words per minute for fifty minutes. For most of us, that doesn’t mean a whole lot.

But to put this in better perspective, if you wrote 9 articles, and those articles were each 200 words long, then you would have written a total of 1800 words.

  • 1800 words can be typed in 50 minutes at 35 words per minute
  • 1800 words can be typed in 12 minutes at 150 words per minute

Dragon NaturallySpeaking can essentially save you 38 minutes when you write nine articles.

Now with those additional thirty-eight minutes, you can spend more time:

  • promoting your blog,
  • networking with people,
  • researching other projects,
  • taking on other work from other networks
  • Sell advertising on those very same articles for $5- $20 per ad in an article!
    • At just $5 per article that’s $45, and that will pay for the Preferred version of the software after 4 hours of work.

Your average part-time blogger could easily pay for Dragon NaturallySpeaking with the additional profits that they would earn from using Dragon NaturallySpeaking on a site monetized with Adsense in just 5 hours of work.

A half day of extra work gets you a pay raise of $36 / hour! :-)

Plus just think of all of the time, that you would now have to make yourself and your site even more successful!

Wow! Stop the presses you are earning big bucks now. J Just kidding, that’s actually the wrong attitude. Google pays you to advertise on your site and pays you when your advertising is effective. Publishing those articles based on our assumptions will generate 5,250 page views. Those Page views will generate 22 clicks, and that will earn you $6.72.

That’s a little better than $1.50 per hour. Not a lot, but you can add that to your sites other earnings from companies like PayPerPost or PayU2Blog.

The key is that it took you 4 hours to write 35 articles at 35 words per minute.

If you use Dragon Naturally Speaking you could write 150 articles in 4 hours with 10 minute breaks.

That would generate 22,500 page views translating into 92 clicks and earnings of $28.79 or about $7.19 per hour, which again can be in addition to your other earnings from the same site off the same articles!

If you buy them with the discount coupon code for Dragon Naturally speaking then it will pay for itself in 13 to 26 hours respectively. For most part time bloggers that is about 3 – 7 days of effort.

But consider that during, 26 hours of writing with Dragon, you will have written 996 articles of 200 words in length. Those 996 articles will generate 149,512 page views to your site in our model!

Now, for a reality check. Odds are you may not be able to sit down and write article after article for more than an hour at 150 words per minute. But the articles that you can write can be written much faster than you could before, and you CAN use that time to do many other things to grow your site and your earnings.
