Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Tomorrow is the official kickoff of the Consumer Electronics Show. It is expected that this year approximately 120,000 people (down from 160k last year) will come to Vegas for the show. I arrived yesterday to cover the event, see what is new, and more importantly catch up with many interesting people doing interesting things inside of and outside of social media.

Wiring MP3 Recorder to Capture Skype Interviews | Maven Mapper's Information

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

I put together this video showing a quick setup of my Skype recording capability with a Sony IC Recorder (pocket MP3 recorder).

see original video article – Wiring MP3 Recorder to Capture Skype Interviews

The setup is not intuitive, but it works.  I meant to create a image that identified where the cords were supposed to be plugged in, but somewhere along the line I lost it.  (I think I wrote the article and my machine crashed and I forgot to recover the article and original image).

Someone asked me about it on YouTube today, and reminded me that I couldn’t find the article either.  I know I wrote it, but couldn’t find it.  :)

So I am publishing this new image of my setup for recording interviews or conversations with skype.

Wiring MP3 Recorder to Capture Skype Interviews

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

After futzing around trying to make this work for the better part of a year, I finally figured out the magic formula of wire splitters necessary to record both my voice and the voice of another skype caller such that I can capture an interview on my portable MP3 player, a Sony that I also use for voice transcription.

As it turns out, I can actually route both my voice and my caller(s)’ voice(s) through my voice recorder, and then out the head phone jack, I can send both of our voices to my microphone input on my computer so that the caller can hear me too!

I put together this video to show what I figured out. The video is probably about as clear as mud, even though this condensed version is much more understandable than the conversation I had with some poor Radio Shack sales person that sold headset microphones, computers, splitters and more, but had never heard of skype, and this guy was at least 10 years younger than me.

For the record, I have tried multiple software solutions that are supposed to record skype conversations, but they all seem to either be creations of bankrupt companies, they just don’t work, or they work, but they screw up skype. That latter mention relates to my attempts to use the software called Pamela for skype, which seemed to record just fine, but completely broke my skype voice mail.

This may look a little convoluted with $6 Radio Shack wire accessories going every which way like a super models to diet pills but it does get the job done.

Catching Up, Avoiding Craziness, Preparing for Travel!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

This week has been hands down crazy, and I just wanted to share a little bit of it with you to help explain why that little bit behind writing on this column and posting some new videos and tutorials.

First, I had to make an unplanned trip to Georgia, after my alarm system for my fire alarm started triggering a false alarm. I had to head to the house where I keep the alarm turned off while I waited for two days for the repair person to show up and replace the sensor. While I was there, I did a great deal of work on my laptop using my air card, while I frequently took breaks to literally clean the cobwebs out of the house which has been shut up for about a year now.

Meanwhile I am trying to repair a trip to Las Vegas for BlogWorldExpo 2008.  This will be my second year attending, and I am working on a promotion whereby I will be running a Dragon NaturallySpeaking demonstration at a booth at the show. I’ll have more details on that soon I hope, because I’m still racking up the fine points of that particular deal. :-)

On top of that, I had to chop down a few trees in the yard, and backup a few last items that were lingering in the house to ship back to North Carolina.

But that was not all that I was doing, I spent a good deal of time catching up with some old friends, neighbors, partners and clients. Plus I was working on the presentation that I will be giving at the Birmingham WordCamp coming up at the end of the month in September, one week after BlogWorld.

Not to mention all the time that I spent driving back and forth from North Carolina to Atlanta this week, and listening to a very long-winded audio book along the way.

On top of all that, I’m still shopping for a good podcasting microphone, a good video smartphone (likely going to be the Nokia N95), which I hope will help me save some money keeping me away from the purchase of a new digital camera.  (I try and save the big digital camera purchases for my wife, a real photographer unlike myself.  She can get a lot more out of a new camera than I can, and I’ve kind of been eyeballing the Nikon D90 for her).

Anyway, I was able to get a chip into Fry’s while I was away, and I’ll submitted by Guitar Center to look at microphones.  I saw the microphone I’m probably going to purchase, but I didn’t pick it up at the time because I thought it a better deal online. I’m looking at the Rode NT1A, a very solid microphone, which will probably be a little bit more than what I need, but I totally don’t want to buy less than what I need and have to repeat purchase for something better later on down the road. This seems like a nice safe choice of metal, even though it’s probably about $50-$60 out of my comfort zone for this particular piece of electronics.

10,000 BC Movie Party

Getting ready to have a back yard movie party watching 10,000 BC tonight.

Just because its Monday night doesn’t mean you can’t stay up late and have fun.

We did upgrade our screen this time and established a canvas on a wooden frame. We’ll see if that works better than hanging a sheet. Still shying away fromt he $600 options, but you never know. We might graduate to that eventually.

Night Vision Web Cam Test during Day

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

So now I need to see how my Day/Night web cam works during the day recording live via utterz.

The audio last night was not terribly great and I’m not sure if that was the camera (which has a built in microphone) or my normal recording equipment. I basically do not know which one was recording last night.

So today, I’m only going to use the camera microphone (everything else is disconnected).

Note, I talked about the audio not matching up to the video (last night) but today when I preview it before saving, it looks like it matched well.

Night Vision Web Cam Test

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

This is a test of my night vision webcam. It is actually a day/night web cam. I’ve plugged it in via a Pinnacle usb video conversion device.

Here’s my original article talking about the setup for this goofy experiment.

That was the first test. Nothing spectacular and the audio could have been better. I have to figure the audio out a bit more as I fine tune my recipes for nocturnal web cam tests.

Mobile Computing – The Set Up

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Every mobile worker is going to work a little differently. For some people it will mean getting themselves to the closest Starbucks, for others they might get a WiFi sniffer out and find an unsecure connection.
For me, I’ve got an aircard and I can park my tukus anywhere. So these days, I find it is more important to keep the right tools handy and focus on recreating a comfortable environment that will help me remain productive while I’m working and not get me just enough connection to waste my time and battery surfing the internet or paying my bills online (my life insurance agent can wait a week more to collect his commission).

Powering WiFi Router with Air Card

NexAira 3G Wireless broadband router working with Verizon Aircard
Today I setup and configured my first 3G Wireless Broadband Router from Powerful Signal. This WiFi router from NexAira essentially connects to the internet via my Verizon Aircard (which looks like and functions simultaneously as a usb flash drive) and it then sets up a WiFi hotspot for multiple computers to access the internet with via just 1 aircard.

Listen to the audio above for more information, or check back soon for our complete review once we have had a chance to put this device through its paces!
